"Dracula"
Ben Blanks

Similar to the way that it happens for most young musicians, Blanks recalls music being an active presence in his life for as far back as he can remember. Potentially thanks to the influence of his father, a music teacher in their small town, his passion for music would only continue to grow with age as he continued to work on his skills while also making time to learn new skills, as he did in third grade when he started learning how to play the piano.

Today, he can proudly say that he is the man behind his own production and writing, the same way that a lot of rising musicians start out. Another humbling fact about Ben Blanks? He learned how to mix and master his music himself so that he could save himself the cost of outsourcing that work.

His new album that he has been working on since January is what inspired him to learn how to do the mixing and mastering himself. Fortunately, he will be able to take this new skill that he has been working on into his future musical endeavors as he not only has the knowledge now, but he also thoroughly enjoys being a part of the behind-the-scenes action.

With the ability to accurately translate his vision through his music, Blanks was able to reach out to the others that are featured on the song (Johan Lenox and Isaac Zale) and get them on board. Using his magical capabilities behind the scenes, he was able to rearrange the music to get the cinematic effect that he was looking for and keep all of his creative freedom.

Being inspired by an eclectic variety of music and artists, Blanks picked up a similar variety of ways that these artists have and continue to manipulate music to push it just out of the box in order to create something powerful and unique.

Speaking of unique, Blanks shoots for his music to be eye-opening, class-conscious, and an overall radical experience for those who are willing to truly listen to what he has to say.

Having the opportunity to sit down with Ben Blanks, we were fortunate enough to get a glimpse into the Chicago based musician’s musical history, the music that inspires him, and the intentions behind his most recent album.

A lot of people today are trying to figure out a way to express the ways that they feel about the events taking place in the world on a daily basis, and for Blanks, he expresses it all through his music. The influence of creators that he has listened to in the past with progressive and leftist views can also be seen in his music. Their eye-opening content inspired Blanks to create some of his own.

He also shoots to educate those who are unclear on political matters. For example, there are people who think that their only options when it comes to belonging to a political party are Democrat and Republican, when in reality that is not the case.

We are fortunate enough to live in a world where creators are starting to really speak up about political issues and they are working to educate those who consume their content, regardless of the channel of media. Providing information on topics that a lot of people are too uncomfortable with to seek on their own can prove to be truly beneficial in the future and we will have artists like Blanks to thank for that.

Despite his love for music and the inevitable pride that he takes in the art that he creates, Blanks states that it’s not about the music, but able the message that he’s trying to convey. Joining others that are demanding that something change in order to improve the current state of the world, Blanks reminds us that the only way that we will be able to accomplish true change is together, as one.

Unification is the answer to a lot of our problems today and we need to work together to allow ourselves to think in a unified way and abandon the “every man for himself” notion. Blanks’ music is sure to resonate with those who are itching to change to be made and are willing to start taking action.
